Weather and the calendar is the biggest factor for angling pressure and bringing more fishermen out or keeping them indoors. In the spring while waiting for perfect conditions sometimes things only get worse, so if theres a reasonable fishing window consider hitting it sooner then later. The salmon are running in New York State - EnviroPolitics Any future precip could raise flows and bring back dirty water color. Those fish should be somewhere in the system and may be spread out now farther upstream. And really you may not want to give up completely on salmon efforts just yet. Look for mod and mostly clear flows in the Oak and low and clear flows in the other area smaller waterways. Even at this almost mid-Oct timeframe, theres still good hookup chances from the nearshore Lake Ontario all the way to the dam, so the fishing opportunity definitely will spread out. Kurt Driscoll. The northeast coastal weather put a damper on show attendance and the vendors participating were down some thanks to Covid worry but the anglers who did visit the show had good interest in all of the Lake Ontario trout and salmon fishing opportunities. A fair number of Kings are loitering in downstream areas on the Oak with skein drifters still into them up at least until yesterday. Fishable flows we have now in Johnson, Oak and Sandy largely a result of bolstered Erie Canal flows. A decent pair of polarized glasses should reveal pods of fish holding around gravel spots. All that cooler water we have again in the Oak could surely be spreading out the fish and drifts are going to need to be down and slow for best hook up chances. Theres lots of good fishing for salmon, steelhead and brown trout ahead! The brown trout action in nearby tribs that was pretty good is a little slower lately thanks to the lower and clearer flows. No serious snow accumulations expected with highs in the 40sF. By most accounts if youre moving around and trying different drifts and spots, guys are hooking up. Guys thru yesterday higher up scored a few hook ups on eggs or beads on fresh steelhead while downstream swingers had a tougher go. Available at Oak Orchard Tackle & Lodge and Narbys. Flows consist of lots of turbine water and overflow water that started to come back up for the end of the past weekend. That good run of Kings in the Oak from end of last week has spread out nearest the dam, but guys are finding pods of spawning fish in the downstream fast water reaches. Best baits will be small egg patterns; be it flies, rubber eggs or even egg sacs. Same for the LES that is coming. Water temps for now are already in the the high 30s F on the Oak and prob going higher with the forecasted warmup thru the end of this week. At least whatever trib and near shore Lake Ontario trout action that is underway is not likely to experience a temp spike anytime soon. Leaf fall is underway so expect daily water level fluctuations thanks to turbine rack cleaning at the dam. Thanks to losing the Canal feed/winter drainage, flows in the Oak are real low. That flow is still actually fishable unless its high AND dirty. That consistency the Oak is known for is showing thru once again. Salmon Fishing at Waterport Dam Daily Update Oak Orchard River On recon today I saw only a few guys parked at the dam. Water color has improved to about 1 plus feet of visibility. Fishing pressure is real light, only a few anglers on the water. Fly, spin or float all fun! Hair jigs and worm harnesses fished off 3-way rigs is the way to go. Rivermouth action has been slow to start but might be picking up as near shore waters cooled down a touch after couple days of med E winds. Very good. Fishing pressure is real light I saw just one car on the Oak. If you catch one, please release it immediately and not harm it. Maybe those fish pushed further upriver as so far theres not been a lot of holding or spawning action except for the piling up at the dam. Not big numbers of steelhead but a few that likely came in on the previous higher flows we had and are a good portent to upcoming steelhead action in the more traditional February or March timeframe.
